As our club’s long history will tell you, the Wheelers have had a big part to play in road racing over the years. These days, we have fewer riders with racing experience in comparison to Swindon Road Club, 24/7 and Performance Cycles, who compete regularly in local and regional events.
However, we are affiliated to British Cycling. This means you can still buy the appropriate licence (usually Gold or Silver) to enter a road race. For more information about events and the background to entering a road race, visit the British Cycling road page.
We support road racing by visiting the big events, such as the Tour of Britain, and events run by the local clubs in Cirencester and Cricklade.
But if you’re a member who’s thinking about becoming the next Chris Froome, you may be interested in trying some of the local, closed-circuit races, Swindon Wheelers usually have representation for the summer series of racing at Thruxton, Castle Combe and Odd Down in Bath. Events are usually held during weekday evenings, but you can look forward to extra races on weekends throughout the summer.
If you’d like to chat to someone on the club committee who has experience of road racing, please contact Ady Short on firstname.lastname@example.org. To get a feel for the racing experience you can read the blog reports here or on Swindon Wheelers Facebook page.
